Two methods are commonly used for routine discharge measurements on surface waters:

    • Discharge measurements with hydrometric vanes (mechanical systems or ultrasonic systems)
    • Discharge measurements with tracer method

For the tracer method we offer our QTRACE measuring system. This measuring system was specially developed for the very common salt dilution method. This measurement method is used in watercourses where a wing measurement is not possible due to strong turbulences or missing measurement profile. A typical application for the QTRACE system is therefore discharge measurement in alpine regions.

The implementation of the measurement method is quite simple. A certain amount of salt is dissolved in a measuring vessel with water. Normal table salt is used. Therefore, the measurement is completely harmless to the environment. The necessary amount of salt is determined by a rough estimate of the discharge.
